Cathay Pacific Airways ist eine bedeutende Airline in Asien, Skytrax zählt sie sogar zu den sechs Fünf-Sterne-Fluggesellschaften der Welt. Neben Personen- werden auch Frachtflüge angeboten zu 114 Zielen in 37 Ländern. Im Jahr 2007 wurden über 23 Millionen Menschen befördert. Dabei fing die Airline 1946 sehr klein an – gegründet wurde sie von dem US-amerikanischen Ex-Air Force Piloten Roy C. Farrell und dem australischen Piloten Sydney H. de Kantzow. Nachdem sie ihren Konkurrenten Hong Kong Airways übernahm, wurde die eigene Flotte modernisiert und erweitert. 1980 fand der erste Flug nach Europa statt, zum Gatwick-Flughafen in London. Durch Investitionen in den Luftfahrtknotenpunkt Hongkong trägt Cathay Pacific Airways zum Ausbau der dortigen Luftfahrtindustrie bei. Als Gründungsmitglied der Oneworld-Alliance unterhält die Airline Codeshare-Partnerschaften mit den Partnern American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines und Qantas. Das Streckennetz von Cathay Pacific Airways hat sich durch die Zusammenarbeit mit den Allianz-Partnern und mit anderen bilateralen Beziehungen bedeutend erweitert. So werden beispielsweise die Flughäfen in Adelaide, Bahrain, Orlando und Paris angeboten. Bei einer Flugbuchung kann man zwischen drei Klassen wählen: die First Class mit Flachbetten, die Business Class mit Lie-Flat-Sitzen und die Economy Class.
